Colombian pop star Shakira and Nigerian singer Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, gave an electrifying performance at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Thursday. They lit up the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City before the first match between Mexico and South Africa.
The ceremony happened at the renovated stadium, which holds 80,000 fans. There were fireworks, impressive choreography, and a giant display of the World Cup trophy as the tournament officially kicked off in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The tournament, featuring 48 teams, will run until July 19. A total of 104 matches are scheduled during this time.
The highlight of the event was when Shakira and Burna Boy sang the tournament’s official anthem, “Dai Dai.” The crowd reacted loudly as the song made its live debut on football's biggest stage.
Shakira wore a bright yellow outfit and led a group of dancers across the stage. Burna Boy joined her for his parts, and the performance quickly became popular online.
Early reactions from the music industry, including coverage from Billboard, show that “Dai Dai” has received strong global attention since its release in mid-May. The song is gaining fast visibility on streaming platforms ahead of the tournament's start.
