South Africa made a strong comeback to get a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in their second Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
After going down just six minutes into the game, Bafana Bafana took control for much of the match. Teboho Mokoena’s penalty in the second half secured a valuable point for South Africa.
This result shows that African teams are making their mark at the World Cup. Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana won their matches, while Cape Verde, Morocco, Egypt, DR Congo, and now South Africa have all managed to draw with top teams like Spain, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal, and the Czech Republic.
The Czech Republic got off to a great start when Michal Sadílek scored from Filip Sojka’s assist in the sixth minute. The Europeans looked threatening early on, with Patrik Schick and Ladislav Krejčí trying to extend their lead.
But South Africa gradually found their rhythm and began to dominate the game. Hugo Broos’ side enjoyed 62 percent possession and created several chances through Oswin Appollis, Aubrey Modiba, Iqraam Rayners and Thapelo Maseko, even though they went into halftime behind 1-0.
Relebohile Mofokeng came on at the start of the second half and brought new energy to the South African attack. Despite some pressure from the Czech Republic, Bafana Bafana kept pushing for an equaliser.
Their effort paid off in the 83rd minute when Mokoena scored from the penalty spot to bring the match level.
The final moments were tense, with both teams having chances to win. South Africa came closest, forcing late saves and creating opportunities through Evidence Makgopa, Modiba, and Mbokazi, but the Czech defence held strong.
South Africa ended the match with more possession and shots on target, matching their opponents in corners as well, showing the quality of their performance.
This draw keeps Bafana Bafana’s hopes alive in Group A and highlights Africa’s growing strength on football's biggest stage.
