Nigeria’s Success Oyibu has made it to the women’s 200m final at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She won her semifinal in 23.13 seconds, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Oyibu kept ahead of South Africa’s Rume Burger, who finished second in 23.18 seconds, to secure her spot in the medal race. Oyibu, who has a season best of 22.90 seconds, is determined to finish strong in the final.
After her semifinal, Oyibu shared her strategy. She focused on saving energy to qualify instead of pushing too hard.
“The race was good, I feel like I can do more, but the plan was to just survive. The semifinal was hard, the job was to just get in. Now it is time to just win,” she said.
Focus on the Final
Oyibu also shared her joy about Jessica Oji’s gold medal in the women’s shot put. However, she mentioned that her main focus is now on her final.
“I am happy for Jessica’s win in the shot put, but now I am fully focused on my own final,” she added.
Oyibu’s performance in Eugene is part of a promising campaign for Nigeria. The country has already made history with Oji’s gold medal. The mixed 4x100m relay team, with Ezechukwu as the anchor leg, also set a Nigerian U-20 record of 41.91 seconds to reach the final.
