The Super Falcons of Nigeria will meet Ghana’s Black Queens on Saturday in Casablanca, Morocco. This match is part of their preparation for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The friendly is set for 16:00 at the Stade El Arbi Zaouli. Both teams see this as a chance to polish their skills before the 14th edition of the tournament kicks off on Sunday.
Nigeria, the country with the most WAFCON titles at 10, began their camp in Casablanca on Monday. They are getting ready for their Group C opener against Malawi in Rabat on Tuesday, July 28.
By Tuesday afternoon, 10 players had arrived at the team’s hotel, the Marriott in Casablanca. Midfielder Toni Payne is expected to join them on Wednesday after her recent transfer to Inter Milan Women from Everton.
Head Coach Justine Madugu led the Super Falcons in their first training session on Tuesday at the Stade El Arbi Zaouli.
Early arrivals included captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeepers Chiamaka Nnadozie and Fatima Oloko, and defenders Oluwatosin Demehin, Glory Ogbonna, Shukurat Oladipo, and Rofiat Imuran. Midfielders Christy Ucheibe and Jennifer Echegini, along with forward Asisat Oshoala, were also present.
Saturday’s match brings back memories of a long-standing rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana. Ghana was the runner-up when Nigeria hosted the first African Women’s Championship in 1998. Matches between these two teams have always been exciting.
Though the result of this game won’t count for anything official, both teams want to build confidence before the tournament starts.
After the friendly, the Super Falcons will focus on Group C. They will play against Malawi on July 28, Zambia on August 1, and Egypt on August 5.
This 16-team tournament will also serve as qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify automatically. The fifth-placed team will move on to the intercontinental play-off tournament.
