In 2016, a pastor told me he was under pressure from a friend to buy an occult ring. This ring was said to perform miracles. He turned down the offer. When I asked how much it cost, I was shocked. The pastor selling this ring was from a well-known church and was promoting it to other pastors in different congregations.

That is like wearing Sodom on your fingers and using it to manipulate and deceive innocent Christians. You cannot succeed if you add anything, no matter how small, to the gospel. I cannot make this warning lighter for you.

Years ago, God called a man and gave him special grace. Pastor Alex (not his real name) was chosen for missions and evangelism. He worked under a large ministry that sent him to many mission fields worldwide. He planted churches, set up community mission centres, and became a key part of that ministry’s global outreach.

But beneath these great achievements, another issue was brewing. Pastor Alex started to look at what he thought was “greener grass” in ministry. He wanted something bigger and more glamorous than just preaching with a microphone and carrying a Bible. To fuel his growing discontent, he slowly cut ties with the destiny relationships God had placed around him. As those relationships faded, the protections around him vanished. Now, Pastor Alex has turned away from God and His teachings, mingling with the same people he was sent to rescue from sin.

Sodom has never helped anyone. Jesus said, “The flesh profits nothing” (John 6:63). Sodom represents a corrupt world where sin is king. When we list the failures in Scripture, Lot easily comes to mind. His journey into Sodom was driven by greed and a lack of spiritual awareness. Lot learned from one of the greatest leaders in the Bible, Abraham, the father of faith. Abraham mentored him for years, giving Lot the chance to grow and reach his potential. Lot did well; his business thrived and became popular.

But sadly, Lot chose to leave the safety of Abraham’s guidance and walked into Sodom. That choice sealed his fate.

Key lesson: Never walk away from a destiny relationship, no matter what happens. A destiny relationship is one God started. You will feel in your heart that God created it, and only God can end it. Examples include Moses and Joshua, Paul and Barnabas, David and Jonathan. The devil uses offense to destroy these relationships because he knows many Christians do not understand that we are only as strong as the relationships we keep.

Some men divorced their wives and lost their glory. Some women have not recovered from losing favor because offense hardened their hearts and drove away the husbands God had for them. I have a friend whose wife shone brightly. Her brand thrived and her name was well-known. Then, offense came. She did something terrible to her husband. He wanted to forgive her, but she insisted, “My husband must apologize to me.” We talked to her. I spoke to her. Her pastor spoke to her. Her family spoke to her. She rejected all of us.

She had a foreign passport and thought her husband was a “blocker” in her life. She left the marriage. Today, she is a shadow of her former self. Invitations to events have stopped. Those who once respected her have turned away. She thought she didn’t need her husband because she lived in a “civilized country” where women have more power. But she forgot that marriage is a spiritual institution that follows spiritual laws. You cannot be wiser than God. When you discard a destiny relationship God set up, you walk straight into Sodom.

Lot’s failure began with his lack of respect for Abraham. Abraham gave him the chance to succeed, but familiarity blinded Lot. He didn’t see he was on the edge of a history-making failure.

Many today are cooling off in Sodom because they foolishly cut ties with mentors who shaped them. They think, “I have arrived. I can handle myself.” They promoted themselves before finishing their training. That was Lot’s downfall. Sodom stands for everything bad. As a pastor, many people have left me. It is normal for people to leave; even Jesus had people walk away. But there is a right time to enter a place and a right time to leave. If you leave before your time, you will pay the price.

Many have left their mentorship too soon and faced attacks and struggles that hurt them. If God leads you into something, He must also lead you out, not your desires. A mentor once told me, “There is a way to enter a place and a way to leave.” You must enter with honor and leave with honor. Sodom is where anyone who leaves destiny relationships dishonorably ends up.

While in Europe, a close friend of mine, a strong believer, faced serious financial troubles. Despite his good qualifications, he had no job. Life was very hard, and he survived on low-paying jobs. During this time, he met a well-known female corporate leader who promised to help him get a job. They set a meeting. But when he arrived, he found out she wanted him to be her sexual partner. The pay was huge. He turned it down immediately. He suffered for doing what was right, taking menial jobs that only added to his pain. But a few years later, a global corporation found his CV online. They reached out to him about a senior manager job. He passed the interviews and got the job without going to Sodom.

The road to Sodom is a path of compromise. Sodom is all about greed and desire. When Lot chose Sodom, he thought he was making the best choice. Why? Because the land looked good from the outside (Genesis 13:10). Sodom always looks good until you experience it. Many have walked into Sodom. The devil has set up many Sodoms to catch hearts now. Some have fallen into the Sodom of adultery. Adultery seems sweet until you taste its bitter truth, only to realize it is poison for the soul. Sexual sin looks good until the consequences hit.

May you never fall into the Sodom of adultery. Sodom always appears attractive until you face its bitterness.
