Tobi Amusan, the current Commonwealth Games champion and world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, will begin her hunt for a third straight title today at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Amusan has won gold in the last two editions of the Games. She is in the first heat today and will compete against Ghana’s Evonne Britton, Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill, and other competitors.
The second heat includes other top runners like Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas and Megan Simmonds from Jamaica.
The heats will start at 11:30 a.m., and the final is set for 9:49 p.m. at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
Amusan is the favourite, having the best season time of 12.28 seconds among the competitors. Before her trip to Glasgow, she placed second at the famous Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, where she set her world record of 12.12 seconds four years ago.
This season, the 29-year-old has recorded 12.28 seconds three times and won two Diamond League events in Paris and Rabat.
Amusan won her first Commonwealth Games title in 2018 at the Gold Coast in Australia. She finished in 12.68 seconds, making her the first Nigerian woman to win this event at the Games.
Four years later, in Birmingham, she defended her title with a Games record of 12.30 seconds.
She is now aiming for a historic third Commonwealth title and may also break her own Games record, considering her current form.
After the Commonwealth Games, Amusan will head back to the Diamond League circuit. She has already secured a spot in the final happening on September 4 and 5 in Brussels, Belgium. She will also look to reclaim the Diamond League title after winning it three times in a row from 2021 to 2023.
