A mother and her child lost their lives when two trucks carrying containers overturned at Mile 2, close to Freeman Market, heading towards Apapa, Lagos.
Vanguard newspaper reported on Sunday that the victims were trapped under the trucks and their containers in this sad accident, which happened over the weekend.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its rescue team worked to evacuate the victims and clear the wreckage. Traffic was redirected through a nearby service lane while a crane and a heavy tow truck were brought in to lift the overturned trucks and containers. Police officers were present to secure the area during the rescue.
The remains of the victims were taken to the police mortuary in Yaba.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called for a thorough investigation to find out what caused the crash. He mentioned possible reasons like mechanical faults, overloading, improper cargo distribution, or driver negligence.
He urged truck operators to make sure their vehicles are safe for the road and that their loads are properly secured.
