US Sends Military Gear to Nigeria

The United States has sent military equipment to Nigeria. This is part of the ongoing partnership between the two countries to fight terrorism.

The delivery happened over the weekend using a US Air Force C-17 aircraft. US Africa Command (AFRICOM) shared this news in a post on X on Thursday.

The post did not list the exact equipment delivered or how much it cost.

“The equipment is part of a foreign military sales agreement that furthers the US-Nigerian partnership and will aid in Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism in the region,” the post said.

It is unclear if this delivery is part of a Foreign Military Sale worth $346 million. This sale was approved by the US State Department in August 2025.

The Foreign Military Sale includes munitions, precision bombs, precision rockets, and other weapons. The US believes this equipment will help Nigeria fight terrorism and illegal arms trafficking, among other issues.

Between 2017 and 2022, the US also approved sales of various weapons to Nigeria. This included 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft costing about $593 million and 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters estimated at $997 million.

Some of this equipment has been delivered, but reports say others are still pending.

The latest delivery by AFRICOM comes after months of increased security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. This includes joint counterterrorism operations, sharing intelligence, and military training. The cooperation grew after tensions between Washington and Abuja. This was sparked by former President Donald Trump’s claim that Christians in Nigeria were targeted more by terrorist groups.

President Trump accused the Nigerian government of not doing enough to protect Christian communities. He warned the US would act against terrorist groups if the situation did not improve. However, Nigerian officials disagreed with this view. They said insurgents and armed groups attack Nigerians regardless of their religion or ethnicity.

Following this, both countries reached an agreement. Under this deal, the US sent about 200 military personnel to Nigeria. Their role is to provide training, intelligence, and operational support after US-Nigeria strikes against Islamic State targets in the North-east of Nigeria.
