Valverde Injured in Madrid Derby Against Atletico

Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde picked up an ankle injury during his team’s derby loss to Atletico Madrid last weekend. The club confirmed the news on Tuesday.

The midfielder from Uruguay got injured after a tackle from Atletico’s Lee Kang-in. Real Madrid believes this tackle should have led to a red card for the South Korean player.

Reports from Spain say Valverde will be out for several weeks. He will also miss Uruguay’s upcoming friendly matches against Japan, South Korea, and India.

“After the tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain in his left ankle,” the La Liga club said in a brief statement.

Real Madrid’s coach Jose Mourinho spoke to the press after the match on Sunday, where his team lost 2-1. He brought printed screenshots of two tackles he thought should have resulted in red cards for Atletico players, including Lee’s tackle on Valverde.
