Thirteen members of the House of Representatives have switched parties, causing a stir in Nigerian politics.
These lawmakers were part of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but have now joined the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This change is seen as a smart move as the elections approach. The representatives want to be with a party that they believe can better serve the people.
The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, shared the news during a session. He said the lawmakers made this decision after talking with their supporters and community leaders. He stressed that party loyalty matters and that representatives should prioritize the needs of their voters.
Analysts say this mass defection could impact the APC as it gears up for the general elections. Losing these members could weaken the party's power in the House and might lead to more lawmakers leaving as the political scene continues to change.
In response to the defections, the APC expressed disappointment but remains hopeful about keeping its majority in the House. Party officials are working to address the issues raised by the defecting lawmakers to stop more members from leaving.
The PDP welcomed the new members, saying their addition will boost the party's strength in the legislature. They believe it will help them push for policies that benefit Nigerians.
