Three African teams saw their hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup dashed after they let go of winning positions in the knockout stage.
These teams are Egypt, Senegal, and DR Congo.
The three teams were on track to achieve great victories against stronger opponents. But late comebacks from Argentina, Belgium, and England crushed their dreams of moving ahead.
Egypt Loses Two-Goal Lead to Argentina
Egypt faced the most heartbreaking defeat in the Round of 16. They threw away a 2-0 lead and lost 3-2 to defending champions Argentina on Tuesday.
Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico put the Pharaohs in a strong position, just 11 minutes away from a historic win at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
But Cristian Romero scored in the 79th minute to pull one back. Then Lionel Messi equalised just four minutes later.
Enzo Fernandez headed in the winning goal during stoppage time, sending Argentina to the quarter-finals. The defeat also had a controversial moment. Egypt had a second-half goal ruled out after a VAR review, and Messi had missed a penalty earlier.
Senegal's Two-Goal Advantage Slips Against Belgium
Senegal also faced an exit after giving up a two-goal lead in their Round of 32 match against Belgium.
Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr put the Lions of Teranga ahead 2-0. But Belgium came back late in the game.
Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute. Youri Tielemans equalised three minutes later, sending the match into extra time.
Belgium completed their comeback when Tielemans scored from a penalty in the final moments of extra time, winning 3-2 and knocking out Senegal.
England Turns DR Congo's Dream to Dust
DR Congo also fell short after failing to keep an early lead against England in the Round of 32.
Brian Cipenga put the Leopards ahead early in the match, and they held on to that lead until late in the game.
England captain Harry Kane scored twice in the closing minutes, turning the match around for a 2-1 comeback win. This secured England's spot in the last 16.
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised his team's determination after avoiding what would have been a shocking elimination.
A Pattern of Late Collapses
The exits of Egypt, Senegal, and DR Congo show a worrying trend for African teams in the tournament.
Even though they played well and battled hard against stronger football nations, all three teams could not maintain their leads late in the matches.
Their losses have sparked conversations about managing games, keeping tactical discipline, and staying focused under pressure. This comes even as their performances show that African teams are becoming more competitive on the World Cup stage.
