Ruben Amorim is now a top choice for the manager job at AC Milan. Talks have started between the club and his agents, as reported.
The Portuguese coach has been out of work since he left Manchester United in January. His time at Old Trafford was tough and lasted 14 months.
Despite his rocky spell in England, Amorim still has a good name because of his success with Sporting CP. There, he created one of the best tactical systems in Europe.
According to BBC Sport on Saturday, AC Milan is looking for a new head coach after they let go of Massimiliano Allegri in May. They made this choice after missing out on Champions League qualification. They finished just outside the top positions after a bad collapse in the last weeks of the season.
Milan seemed to be on track for a strong finish after a big win against rivals Inter in March. This win put them in a good spot.
But their form dropped sharply. They only won three out of their last ten matches, which cost them a place in Europe’s top competition.
Along with Amorim, other big names are also being considered for the role. Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently managing the United States national team, is one. Oliver Glasner, who recently left Crystal Palace after their success in Europe, is another.
Ralf Rangnick, a former Manchester United manager, was also in the running at first. But he is no longer a candidate since he has committed to the Austria national football team until 2028.
If Amorim gets the job, he might face familiar opponents quickly. AC Milan is set to play Manchester United in a pre-season match in Wrocław, Poland on 15 August. This game could add an interesting twist to his return to top-level management.
For AC Milan, the search is on for a coach who can bring back consistency and help the club get back into the Champions League. For Amorim, this chance could help him rebuild his reputation at one of Europe’s most famous clubs.
