Former Coventry midfielder Don Hutchison has called out Taiwo Awoniyi for missing a big opportunity in Coventry City's 1-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Awoniyi joined Coventry this summer after not playing much at Nottingham Forest. In the first half of the match, he was set up perfectly by a loose pass from Antoine Semenyo, but he sent his shot wide.
Hutchison, who was commenting on the match, said the Nigerian striker should have done better with that chance.
"That is a shame, because his run was fantastic. Once he gets away, you think, can he pick a corner, has he got the composure? Can he go round the goalkeeper or dink it over him?"
"That is a big chance and one he should be taking," he added.
In the second half, Awoniyi was taken off for Ellis Simms as Coventry tried to find an equaliser. The missed chance was crucial because Manchester City grabbed the win with a header from Erling Haaland. He scored after connecting with a cross from Semenyo, who got the ball from debutant Enzo Fernandez.
Haaland almost scored more. He had a powerful shot saved by Coventry's goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, and another shot was ruled out for offside in the second half.
Rushworth had to make several important saves during the game. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma also made great saves, stopping shots from Jack Rudoni and Loum Tchaouna before denying substitute Simms late in the match.
This defeat leaves Coventry without any points after three games in the Premier League this season. On the other hand, Manchester City keeps their perfect record under manager Enzo Maresca. Awoniyi will be eager to make things right when Coventry plays again.
