Femi Azeez, part of the Championship Team of the Season and a record-breaker for the Eagles, shares his thoughts on winning the Unity Cup, his dreams in the Premier League, and what it means to represent Nigeria in this chat with PETER AKINBO.
Let’s start with your debut. How did it feel to break that record?
I didn’t know it was a record until after the game. I just focused on playing, and it felt exciting. The coach gave me the freedom to express myself, and I’m glad I scored goals. It felt good, and I felt proud.
Can you walk us through your goals?
We came to win the tournament, and playing with (Terem) Moffi was great. Whenever he passed the ball to me, I just shot, and it went in. I’ve not played in those roles before, but I really enjoyed it. The goals were just rewards for our teamwork.
Did you feel any pressure before your debut?
Not at all. I felt honoured to represent my country. I was relaxed and grateful to score those goals.
How was it to win the Unity Cup, especially with your contribution?
I’m really happy we won the cup again. We played with unity and freedom. It showed we could get the job done. It’s a great honour for me to wear Nigeria’s jersey.
The Super Eagles won easily with a 3-0 score. What was the reason?
Unity and hard work. The manager told us to be aggressive and win every duel. We did that well. There were some mistakes, but we made up for them with hard work. We played well in the final and won the cup. We know we can improve, but let’s enjoy the win for now.
Your first outing brought three goal contributions. What does playing for Nigeria mean to you?
It was amazing. The fans on social media and those at the games made it deafening whenever we attacked. As players, we love that. It’s been fantastic, and meeting coach Eric Chelle was great. He’s a nice and funny person.
Was it tough to choose between Nigeria, Spain, and England?
I’ve always felt close to Nigeria since my Dad is from here. I always said it would be an honour to play for Nigeria. So when the manager called, I said, ‘No brainer, I want to play for Nigeria’. I enjoyed my time with the team.
You made it to the Championship Team of the Season and now play for Nigeria. Are you ready for the fame?
Probably not, to be honest. I’m not sure I’m prepared for the attention, especially now that I’m on the Super Eagles team. But I want to represent my country well. This has been a great experience for me.
You mentioned being on the Championship team. You want to play in the EPL. What drives that?
As a footballer, you want to play at the highest level. I had a good season in the Championship, and playing internationally is a step up. Whenever I achieve something, I want more. I am always hungry for success. The Premier League is the top of football, and I want to get there.
You had a great season. How did that feel, and what helped you reach this level?
I loved it. Playing with great players and good coaches gave me confidence. It feels good to be in a good team and win games. I came in with more confidence this season, and I was able to show my skills. The goal was promotion to the Premier League, but even without that, it was still a good season.
How significant was this season for you after early injuries?
It was incredible. I had some setbacks at the start of the season, but my teammates were very supportive. They helped me build my confidence. I think I grew as a player and a person. It was a team effort, and I was lucky to get goals and assists. I wish I played more, but I’m happy with what I achieved.
Do you have a message for your Nigerian fans?
Thank you all for your support. I hope to keep making you happy so the support continues. It’s a big responsibility, but I am ready for it.
