Babcock University in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has raised alarm over a fake “Honorary Certificate” that is making the rounds on social media. This certificate is said to be linked to Nigerian comedian and content creator, Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, known as Carter Efe.
In a statement released on Monday and posted on its official social media pages, the university stated that the document is not real and did not come from them. They also mentioned that they are taking legal action to find out who is behind the fake certificate.
The university warned employers, professional groups, and the public not to accept or act on the document.
The problem started on 23 September 2025 during a live stream. Carter Efe reacted angrily to viewers he claimed were dissing him.
During this live stream, he said, “I went to Babcock University and graduated with first-class honours. Go and ask. I studied Biochemistry. I was the best in my set. Make una no use me dey play o.” He repeated this claim later on his X account, which used to be called Twitter.
Many people at the time thought he was joking or just showing off his online personality. But the issue came back in June 2026 when a fake “Honorary Certificate” appeared online.
This document, which had the university’s name, logo, and seal, spread on social media and seemed to back up Carter Efe’s earlier claim.
The university pointed out that the certificate has clear mistakes. They said the “Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club” mentioned in the document does not exist.
According to the university, Biochemistry is part of the Benjamin S. Carson (Snr) College of Health and Medical Sciences, while the Computer Club operates separately within the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences.
The university noted that the document wrongly combined both areas, making a club that is not real.
They also corrected the academic term used in the certificate.
“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no academic classification or degree known to Babcock University as ‘First Class Upper’. The recognised classification is First Class Honours,” the statement reads.
The university added that student clubs or departments cannot issue degrees, honours, or academic titles. Only official certificates and transcripts from the Office of the Registrar are valid.
Babcock University warned that using or sharing fake academic documents is a serious crime.
They said anyone caught making or using fake certificates for jobs, admissions, promotions, or immigration could face legal action.
The university also mentioned that it may take both civil and criminal actions against anyone who misuses its name, logo, seal, or certificates.
They urged the public and organisations to always check academic documents directly with the school before accepting them.
