Barcelona have shown fresh interest in Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen. This comes after they could not make progress in their attempt to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, according to Todomercatoweb.
The Italian sports news site reported that since the Alvarez deal did not pan out, Barcelona now sees Osimhen as a key target. They are expected to take action soon.
TeamTalk also mentioned that Barcelona's sporting director Deco has intensified efforts to bring in Osimhen. He had been on Barcelona’s list last summer as a backup option.
Osimhen is viewed as easier to sign than Alvarez. He is a strong option for a club looking for attacking players as the transfer window nears its end.
The 27-year-old has begun the new season just like he finished the last. He has scored four goals in Galatasaray’s first two Super Lig matches. He helped his team earn a point with two goals against newly promoted Corum FK. He then scored two more and provided an assist in a 4-0 victory over Erzurumspor.
His current form has extended his streak of direct goal contributions in the Super Lig to 15 matches. In that time, he has netted 15 goals and provided six assists.
Osimhen ended the 2024/25 season as the Super Lig’s leading scorer, with 26 goals in 37 matches across all competitions. His performance helped Galatasaray win a domestic double.
Since his permanent move from Napoli for a club-record €75 million last year, Osimhen has played a key role in helping Galatasaray keep their league title. This has attracted attention from several top clubs in Europe, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
Galatasaray has repeatedly stated they do not want to sell Osimhen. But their position is facing increasing pressure as more clubs show interest.
Barcelona’s management is reportedly working hard to finalize the signing of a new striker before the transfer window closes.
