Barcelona has signed defender Joao Cancelo on a free transfer, the club announced on Thursday.
“The full-back arrives as a free agent and signs until June 30, 2029,” Barca said in a statement.
Cancelo, who plays for Portugal, ended his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal to return to Camp Nou.
The 32-year-old has been on loan at Barca twice, including during the second half of last season, helping Hansi Flick’s team keep the La Liga title.
Cancelo has played in Portugal, Spain, and Italy before moving to Manchester City in 2019.
He was loaned to Bayern Munich and then to Barcelona in the 2023/24 season before joining Al Hilal in 2024.
Cancelo joins Rodri, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi at Barcelona this summer. The Catalan club is still searching for a striker after Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres left the team.
Barca aimed to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid but must find another option since the Rojiblancos are not allowing the Argentina international to leave.
Flick’s team will kick off their La Liga season on Sunday against Elche.
