Tottenham Hotspur has signed Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after he left Liverpool.

BBC Sport reported on Friday that the 32-year-old left-back will officially join Spurs on July 1. This comes after his contract with Liverpool ended, marking the end of a successful seven years at Anfield.

Robertson had said earlier that he would leave Liverpool this summer. This allowed Tottenham to sign the experienced player without paying a transfer fee.

The North London club tried to sign Robertson during the January transfer window when Thomas Frank was the manager. They reached an agreement with Liverpool, but the deal fell through. Liverpool could not recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.

Tottenham managed to stay in the Premier League on the last day of the season under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. De Zerbi welcomed the new addition of the veteran defender.

"Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team," De Zerbi said.

"He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch."

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and made 378 appearances for the team. During his time at Anfield, he won two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups, and the FA Cup.

The Scotland international is also an important player for his national team. He is set to lead Scotland at this summer’s World Cup and has earned 92 international caps.

Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange also spoke highly of the new signing.

"His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for, and won, major honours," Lange said.

"Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club."

Robertson is one of Tottenham’s first big signings ahead of the new season. De Zerbi aims to strengthen his squad and improve the club's position in the Premier League.
