Cagliari forward Yael Trepy has woken up and has been taken off the ventilator two days after he was found unconscious in a swimming pool in Sardinia.

The 20-year-old was airlifted to the hospital on Sunday afternoon after he had trouble while swimming with his friends at a villa.

Trepy was put in a medically induced coma and placed on a ventilator after the incident. His condition has improved, and doctors started reducing his sedation and ventilation on Tuesday.

Cagliari said this process helped Trepy wake up from the induced coma.

Dr Stefania Milia, the Director of the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit at Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, said on Wednesday that Trepy had fully regained consciousness.

“Upon awakening, the patient showed a full recovery of consciousness: he is alert and co-operative and, at present, shows no evident neurological deficits,” she said.

Trepy is still in intensive care and will be watched closely.

“[He] continues to receive close clinical and respiratory monitoring,” Milia added.

An earlier medical update said Trepy was “fever-free” and that his breathing had improved from his earlier severe condition when he arrived at the hospital.

But doctors mentioned that his outlook is still cautious.

The incident reportedly happened when Trepy went to a part of the swimming pool where he could not touch the bottom and started having trouble.

Trepy had the weekend off with his Cagliari teammates after their 1-0 Coppa Italia win over Arezzo on Friday.

He played 54 minutes in that match.

Last season, the forward made eight Serie A appearances for Cagliari, scoring once. He joined the club’s academy in 2022 after starting his youth career with the Parisian team US Creteil-Lusitanos.

His waking up and removal from the ventilator show a big improvement, but Trepy is still in intensive care under medical supervision.
