A 54-year-old Customs officer, Etteng Ise, has died in a car accident on the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Cross River State.

The crash happened near Alesi Village in Ikom Local Government Area around 2:56 p.m.

Sunday Eitokpah, the police spokesperson in Cross River, confirmed this in a statement released in Calabar on Monday.

Mr Eitokpah, who is an assistant superintendent of police, said Mr Ise worked at the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River. He reportedly lost control of his vehicle while trying to avoid a pothole.

The vehicle went off the road into the bush and hit a tree.

He added that Mr Ise was taken to Holy Family Hospital in Ikom, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

Mr Ise’s body has been moved to the hospital mortuary.

The Police Command in Cross River expressed condolences to the family, colleagues, and the Nigeria Customs Service.

They urged drivers to be careful, avoid speeding, and stay alert while driving, especially on highways.

The command also asked road users to pay attention to road conditions and take necessary steps to prevent accidents.
