Nigeria’s D’Tigress faced a tough defeat on Friday, losing 81-99 to South Korea at the FIBA Women’s World Cup. Amy Okonkwo led a strong comeback for Nigeria, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
The match started with both teams playing closely. South Korea ended the first quarter with a 26-22 lead.
Grace Efosa made two free throws, bringing Nigeria closer by six points. Pallas Kunaiyi followed up, cutting the gap to just four points.
In the second quarter, South Korea pushed their lead to nine points. But Nigeria fought back and went into halftime trailing by only three points. South Korea led 48-45 at the break in Berlin.
Okonkwo came back strong in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in a row. This brought Nigeria to within just one point of South Korea at 59-58. D’Tigress kept up the pressure on the Koreans.
Despite the effort, Nigeria could not keep the momentum going. They eventually lost 81-99, as South Korea’s strong offense made the difference.
Okonkwo was Nigeria’s standout player, scoring 22 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and making three assists in 30 minutes of play.
Musa also had a solid game with a double-double, scoring 13 points and leading the team with 12 rebounds in 20 minutes.
Ezinne Kalu contributed 11 points, two rebounds, and a team-high five assists in nearly 29 minutes. Victoria Macaulay added 10 points in just under 16 minutes off the bench.
Promise Amukamara finished with five points, two rebounds, and four assists while playing the most minutes at 28.
Even with Nigeria’s strong fightback, they could not match South Korea’s scoring power, leading to an 18-point loss.
