The Super Eagles coach is facing backlash from Nigerian football fans. This comes after the team's official X account mocked France for their 2-0 loss to Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Once Spain won their spot in the final, the Super Eagles’ account tweeted: “Beating Spain isn’t for everyone.” This was a nod to Nigeria’s famous 3-2 comeback against Spain in their first match at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.
Many fans criticized the post, questioning the timing and sensitivity of the message. They pointed out that Nigeria has not qualified for the World Cup for the second time in a row.
Popular influencer Unkle Ayo was quick to condemn the tweet. He wrote, “You are not ashamed of yourself. When you’re not Cristiano Ronaldo, your own no pass to dey rewarm glory days from 1928.”
Another influencer, Asiwaju Lerry, slammed the post, asking, “Do you not have shame at all?” Lagos-based on-air personality Shina Awoyemi also weighed in. He said, “We did not qualify and you’re posting this? Chasing clout with past glory.”
A user on X, named Osimen, raised concerns about the team’s focus. He said, “You’re living in your past when others are already enjoying the future in their present life. Can the present or past Super Eagles beat the Spanish team right now? You should hide your face in shame. You didn’t qualify for the World Cup.”
Supporter Mr. Raymond described the post as embarrassing. He stated, “Y’all just like to bring us premium embarrassment. Can y’all even beat DR Congo to qualify for the FIFA World Cup? Even in 2038, y’all won’t still be at the World Cup. So stop seeking attention with this trash. Spain will outplay y’all and it will rain goals, to be very frank.”
The social media post referred to one of the greatest moments in Nigerian football. This was when the Super Eagles came back to defeat Spain 3-2 in Nantes during the 1998 World Cup.
Fernando Hierro and Raúl scored for Spain, while Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal, and Sunday Oliseh helped Nigeria secure the win.
FIFA ranks Spain 2-3 Nigeria among “The greatest FIFA World Cup upsets.” This was during Nigeria’s second World Cup, where they were not expected to challenge a strong Spain team featuring stars like Fernando Hierro, Raúl, and Luis Enrique.
Sadly, Nigeria is not part of the ongoing tournament. They failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, continuing a drought after missing out on the 2022 finals in Qatar.
