The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has praised Edo Queens for qualifying for the CAF Women’s Champions League. He called this a great achievement that puts Edo State at the top of women’s football in Nigeria and West Africa.
Idahosa made this statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Friday Aghedo, on Sunday in Benin.
Edo Queens earned their spot after they beat Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa 4-1 on penalties in a thrilling WAFU-B Women’s tournament final held in Burkina Faso on Saturday.
While congratulating Edo Queens, the current champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League, the Deputy Governor praised the players and coaching staff for their hard work and determination to secure the qualification.
He also thanked Governor Monday Okpebholo for investing in sports. He noted that the governor has created a good environment for Edo athletes and teams to succeed in both national and international competitions.
“This achievement has put Edo State at the forefront of women’s football in Nigeria and West Africa,” he said.
Idahosa also recognized the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, for his leadership and support for sports development in the state.
He explained that Enabulele’s work, along with the commission's team, has helped build the systems needed for Edo athletes and teams to compete at the highest level.
The Deputy Governor praised the coaches, technical staff, and other officials who supported Edo Queens during the tournament in Burkina Faso. He said their dedication was key to the team’s success.
Idahosa pointed out that Edo Queens’ qualification is not just a win for the team but also a big moment for Nigerian women’s football. It gives Nigeria another chance to compete in the top women’s club football competition in Africa.
“I congratulate the players, coaches, technical team, officials, and the entire Edo Queens family on this well-deserved qualification.
“You have made Edo State and Nigeria proud. Your victory shows what can happen when talent meets hard work, commitment, and the right support.
“We are proud of you and look forward to seeing you achieve even more on the continental stage,” Idahosa said.
