The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party for the upcoming Ekiti State election, Peter Obafemi, has urged political parties and candidates to center their campaigns on real policies and solutions to the problems facing the people of Ekiti.
In a statement released on Sunday, Obafemi mentioned that his talks with residents across Ekiti showed rising worries about unemployment, poverty, food scarcity, poor infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security.
He said that meetings with community leaders, farmers, traders, civil servants, students, artisans, and professionals revealed that many people want solutions to economic and social problems instead of political talk.
"As Ekiti State gets ready for the June 20, 2026, governorship election, it is important that public discussion stays focused on the issues that directly affect the lives and livelihoods of our people," the statement said in part.
Obafemi pointed out that youth unemployment and the migration of skilled workers from the state are major issues. He noted that although Ekiti produces many educated graduates and talented people, the lack of industrial growth and job opportunities has pushed many young people to look for work elsewhere.
"Ekiti continues to produce highly educated graduates and talented individuals, yet the absence of sufficient industries and large-scale employers has limited opportunities for gainful employment," he said.
He emphasized the need for targeted investments in economic growth. He added that government policies should support entrepreneurship, innovation, and involvement from the private sector.
"The state must create an environment where businesses can thrive, promote entrepreneurship, support innovation, and attract investments that can create jobs," Obafemi said.
He also mentioned that agriculture, technology, manufacturing, tourism, and small to medium enterprises should be prioritized as key areas for economic growth.
Obafemi raised concerns about poverty and food insecurity, despite Ekiti's agricultural potential.
"We need more investment in modern farming techniques, access to loans for farmers, better storage facilities, adding value, and improved market access.
"Strengthening the agricultural value chain will not only boost food security but also create jobs and encourage rural development," he said.
He further called for measures to lessen the state's reliance on federal funds, arguing that a stronger local economy and wider revenue sources are essential for lasting development.
"Sustainable development requires a stronger local economy and a broader revenue base," he stated.
On infrastructure, he acknowledged some progress in road construction and repairs but said many rural and community roads still need work.
"Improving transportation networks will help move agricultural products, boost trade, and connect communities better," he said.
The governorship hopeful also talked about issues related to access to clean water and sanitation, calling for fresh solutions to enhance water supply and public health in the state.
He stated that security is crucial for economic growth and social stability, urging better cooperation among security agencies, local communities, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders.
"The safety of lives and property is necessary for economic growth and social stability," he noted.
Obafemi also called for renewed investment in healthcare, especially in rural areas where access to good medical services is limited.
"Strengthening primary healthcare centers, improving medical facilities, and expanding access to preventive healthcare will greatly benefit the residents," he said.
Regarding education, Obafemi asked stakeholders to maintain Ekiti’s reputation as the “Fountain of Knowledge” through better facilities, teacher training, and policies to reduce school dropouts.
"The state has earned a reputation as the Fountain of Knowledge, but current realities demand renewed investment in educational infrastructure, teacher development, student support systems, and policies to cut down on dropouts and improve learning outcomes," he said.
Obafemi urged political players to improve the quality of public discussion ahead of the election.
"I believe it is important for candidates, political parties, and stakeholders to engage citizens on real policy issues and practical solutions. Elections should be a chance to discuss ideas, review plans, and think about the future direction of our state," he said.
He expressed confidence that the state could overcome its challenges with good leadership and wise management of resources.
"The challenges facing Ekiti are significant, but they are not impossible to solve. With responsible leadership, careful planning, wise management of resources, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, the state can achieve sustainable economic growth, better social welfare, and more opportunities for its people," Obafemi added.
