Enugu Community Lifts Ban on Mob Attack Survivor, Six Arrested

The leaders of Azunkwo Ndeagbor in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State have lifted the ban on a 34-year-old mother of six. She survived domestic violence, gang rape, and mob torture.

This change happened after the Women’s Aid Collective stepped in. They have been following the case closely and pushing for the survivor's safety and justice.

WACOL shared this news in a statement on Monday, which was sent to our correspondent.

The survivor and her family were reportedly expelled from the community by the traditional ruler and the President-General after they told the police about the incident.

WACOL said that the community leaders have now formally canceled the ban and returned the survivor's belongings. This includes her mobile phone and a water storage tank.

The Enugu State Police Command has also arrested and charged six suspects linked to the case.

The statement read, "Following quick action and support, we have achieved significant steps for the 34-year-old woman who faced mob violence, attempted murder, and banishment in Azunkwo Ndeagbor in Aninri Local Government Area.

"The community has formally lifted the ban in writing and returned all seized property, including her mobile phone and water tank.

"The Enugu State Police Command has arrested and charged six suspects. We are still working to ensure that the other 18 people involved are also caught so that all 24 can face justice."

WACOL mentioned that through mediation, the survivor and her husband, who is said to have instigated the attack, have agreed to live peacefully together.

The organization is acting as a friend of the court to ensure that the survivor and her children receive proper legal protection.

WACOL praised the Enugu State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and the Ministry of Children, Gender and Social Development for their help and commitment to following the law.

This news comes as there are ongoing calls for better protection for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. There are also demands for community leaders to avoid actions that might further harm victims or block their access to justice.

WACOL said they will keep monitoring the case and continue to push for the arrest and prosecution of the remaining suspects.
