Falconets Must Stay Focused as They Face Colombia for Semi-Final Spot

Nigeria’s Falconets should not let their impressive 3-0 win over England distract them. Coach Moses Aduku has urged his players to concentrate fully on Colombia if they want to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Falconets qualified for the quarter-finals after defeating England in Bielsko-Biała on Thursday. But Aduku warned that they cannot keep thinking about that result as they prepare to face Colombia in Łódź on Sunday.

“It would be foolish for us to keep thinking about the win over England. That match is over, and we quickly ended our celebration in the dressing room to focus on the game against Colombia,” Aduku told reporters in Poland.

The coach knows that Colombia is a tough team. They knocked out the tournament hosts, Poland, with a 1-0 win in the Round of 16.

“The Colombians eliminated the host nation and will not be an easy team for us,” he said.

The Falconets are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. That year, Nigeria finished as runners-up. They have made it to the final two times but have never won the title.

Aduku believes his players know how important this chance is, but they need to show discipline on the field.

“We must give our best, fight for every ball, and aim for victory. The girls understand that this is a unique chance for them to make their mark in Nigerian football,” he said.

Nigeria goes into the quarter-final with confidence. Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei, and Mary Mamudu all scored against England.

Mamudu has been one of the Falconets' top scorers, netting goals against Poland and South Korea in friendly matches before the tournament.

Captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma is expected to play a crucial role again. She had a great performance against England, making six key saves, including stopping a penalty, during a tough first half against the Young Lionesses.

The Falconets also have a good record against Colombia at this level.

Nigeria beat the South Americans 1-0 in the semi-finals of the 2010 tournament. Ebere Orji scored just two minutes into the match, helping the Falconets reach their first final in a FIFA women’s football competition.

However, the current team will need to perform well again if they want to repeat that success and get closer to winning their first U20 Women’s World Cup title.

The team trained on Saturday with positive energy. The Nigeria Football Federation also paid outstanding daily allowances for players and officials.

NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme encouraged the team to keep their focus as the tournament reaches its critical stage.

“You have kept a strong mentality since the 0-0 draw with China in your second match,” Mr Ikpeme told the players.

“Tournaments become tougher in the later stages. But strong teams become even stronger when the challenge increases.”

He expressed belief that the Falconets could defeat Colombia and continue their quest for the title.

The quarter-final is both a challenge and a chance for Nigeria to continue their tradition of strong performances in this competition.
