Nigeria’s top fencer, Inkosi Brou, has won the 2026 FIE Satellite Sabre Viking Cup in Iceland. This victory marks his third international medal for Nigeria, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Brou missed the Commonwealth Championships last month in Lagos. He focused on this one-day event and came out on top in this prestigious tournament backed by the International Fencing Federation.
As the highest-ranked fencer in the competition, Brou showed great skill and calm against opponents from various countries. These included teams from Portugal, the UAE, Italy, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Jamaica, Hong Kong, Australia, Great Britain, and the host, Iceland.
Brou is the grandson of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, who was the former Director-General of NAFDAC. He started his Viking Cup journey in the round of 16, defeating UAE’s Hamid Al Maazmi with a strong 15, 4 score.
Next, he faced Kenneth Kong from Sweden in the quarter-finals. It was a close match, but Brou managed to win 15, 11. In the semi-finals, Brou’s experience helped him beat Lumir Kral from the Czech Republic, who was the No. 4 seed, with a score of 15, 12.
In the final, Brou went up against Iceland’s Andri Maateev. He rose to the challenge and won decisively with a score of 15, 6, taking the title and quieting the home crowd.
At only 18 years old, Brou is already Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer globally. He trains at the Scarsdale Fencing Center and the Peter Westbrook Foundation in the United States.
Brou now aims for an even bigger goal, to be the first Nigerian fencer at the Olympic Games. He has his eyes set on Los Angeles 2028.
In 2024, Brou made history by winning Nigeria’s first global fencing medal, a silver, at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Reykjavik. In 2025, he also earned bronze at the African Junior Championships in Angola.
