Keane Says Man City Players Should Toss Medals If Titles Are Stripped

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has said that Manchester City players should throw away their medals if the club loses titles over breaking financial rules.

Speaking before England's match against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, Keane said that the achievements of City’s players during the time in question have been damaged by the alleged financial wrongdoing.

"If I was a player, I’d be 100% sticking those medals in the bin. Of course you would, it’s cheating," Keane told ITV Sport.

"They won it on the pitch because cheating was going on."

The Premier League has found Manchester City guilty of breaking its financial rules for a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. City still denies any wrongdoing and plans to appeal the decision.

During this time, City won eight trophies, including three Premier League titles.

Keane also slammed the club, saying, "They knew it would hurt a lot of people, but they’ve still done it."

On the other hand, former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney had a different opinion on whether United should get titles if City loses them.

Rooney was part of the United team that finished second to City in the 2011-12 Premier League season. Speaking on the Stick to United podcast, he said, "I wouldn’t feel comfortable about accepting another Premier League medal if I’m being honest, because I don’t think we deserve it."

"We didn’t do enough that season to win the league."

Rooney added that he would understand the disappointment of City players who may not have known about the activities happening above them.

The Premier League has not yet announced penalties for Manchester City, but a possible punishment could include taking away their Premier League titles. City is expected to appeal the ruling.
