Kebbi Governor Attends UN General Assembly in New York

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has joined Nigeria’s team at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA.

Idris is taking part in Nigeria’s activities alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is standing in for President Bola Tinubu at this important gathering.

The governor’s involvement was announced in a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, on Tuesday.

The 81st UN General Assembly started on September 8, 2026. This year’s theme is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

The statement noted that this high-level meeting brings together world leaders and representatives from member states to discuss global issues. These issues include sustainable development, climate action, peace and security, human rights, technology changes, and cooperation among nations.

The statement quoted the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, who discussed Nigeria’s plans and commitments during the assembly at a briefing with the Nigerian delegation.

Shettima is expected to present Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, September 24.

The statement added that Idris’ presence will allow Kebbi to connect with global leaders, partners, investors, and international organizations. The focus will be on attracting investment and building partnerships for the state's development.

“Governor Nasir Idris’s participation provides an opportunity for Kebbi State to engage with global leaders, development partners, investors and international organisations, with particular attention to attracting investment and strengthening partnerships that can contribute to the state’s development,” the statement partly said.

Idris will also join discussions on peace, security, sustainable development, and investment. This includes activities related to the planned launch of the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework for 2026, 2030.

Other activities mentioned in the statement include the SDG Roundtable Discussion 2026, the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, the African-Caribbean High-Level Interactive Dialogue, and the Nigeria Investment Forum.

The statement explained that the involvement of state governors and other Nigerian officials is part of efforts to boost Nigeria’s relationships with international partners. This aims to promote investment, development cooperation, and strategic partnerships.
