Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is about to start a new chapter in Cyprus. He is close to joining First Division club PAC Omonia after leaving Barnsley in England.

Nwakali ended his contract with Barnsley by mutual agreement. This made him a free agent and opened the door for his move to Cyprus.

Nwakali is from the Diamond Football Academy. He became well-known when he led Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile back in 2015. He also won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.

At 24 years old, Nwakali's great performances at the World Cup earned him a spot at Arsenal. But he faced problems with paperwork, including a work-permit issue that kept him from playing for Arsenal’s senior team for months.

After that, he had loan spells with MVV Maastricht, VVV-Venlo, and Porto B. He then moved permanently to Spanish teams Huesca, Alcorcón, and Ponferradina. Later, he played for Chaves in Portugal before joining Barnsley in August last year.

His move to PAC Omonia is seen as a chance for him to restart his career and make a mark in the Cypriot top league.
