Marseille coach Bruno Genesio is worried about the fitness of Nigerian midfielder Daniel Nnadi. This follows Nnadi being forced off the pitch with a knee injury during Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Monaco, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Nnadi came on at half-time to replace Himad Abdelli but could only play for 28 minutes. He was substituted in the 74th minute after it looked like he picked up an injury.
Genesio confirmed that Nnadi is injured, but they have not yet figured out how serious it is.
“Nnadi felt a twisting sensation in his knee,” Genesio said, as reported by La Minute OM.
Nnadi will have more tests to check how bad the injury is. This raises doubts about whether he can play in Marseille’s next Ligue 1 matches.
The 21-year-old has only played as a substitute this season. His potential absence could limit Genesio’s options in holding midfield. Abdelli and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are currently ahead of him in the lineup.
This injury comes at a bad time for Nnadi. He is trying to make a name for himself in the Marseille team after playing regularly for Nigeria in the Unity Cup and in friendlies against Portugal and Poland for the 2026 World Cup.
Marseille began their Ligue 1 season with a 4-0 win over Strasbourg. They then lost 2-0 to Monaco on Sunday.
Paris Brunner scored two goals for Monaco, one before and one after half-time, leading them to victory. Monaco is the only team that has won both their opening matches in Ligue 1 this season.
Nnadi earned his first senior Nigeria cap at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. He played 14 minutes in the Super Eagles’ 3-1 win over Uganda.
With more medical checks needed, Marseille and Nigeria will now wait for updates on Nnadi’s condition before knowing how long he might be out.
