Karolina Muchova ended Naomi Osaka's dream of winning her first Wimbledon title. The Czech player, who is seeded 10th, beat the four-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets during the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Muchova, who was a runner-up at the French Open before, secured a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 win on Court One. This victory puts her in the semi-finals, where she will face Coco Gauff.
“It’s unbelievable, I’m sure happy with today’s win, this atmosphere,” Muchova said after the match.
“I’d played three times on this court, and it had been 0-3.... but I finally made it today and got that win. I was nervous, I was very nervous.”
Muchova had lost in the first round during her last four appearances at Wimbledon. Now, she has gone further than ever before at the All England Club, improving on her quarter-final losses in 2019 and 2021.
Osaka reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a big win over world number one Aryna Sabalenka. But she couldn't keep that momentum going. Osaka made 32 unforced errors in a disappointing match.
