My Music Thrives on Creative Control, Says D Howell

Canadian-Jamaican artist and producer D Howell has shared that having full control over his music allows him to create a unique sound. But this independence also means he has to handle all parts of his career.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, Howell, who produces, writes, and masters his own songs, talked about how being self-produced lets him express his artistic vision without limits.

“The biggest advantage is having complete creative freedom. Every beat, every lyric and every production choice reflects my vision without compromise. I can build a song exactly the way I hear it in my head,” he explained.

He also acknowledged that being independent comes with the challenge of managing the business side of things.

“As an independent artist, you’re not just making music; you’re also managing the business, marketing, planning releases and investing in yourself. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it also makes every accomplishment much more meaningful,” he added.

Howell emphasized that while he follows modern sounds, staying true to himself is key to his music.

“I pay attention to what’s happening sonically because I want my music to compete on a global level, but I never chase trends just because they’re popular. I draw inspiration from my own experiences, my Jamaican roots and the people around me. When the emotion is genuine, listeners can feel it,” he said.

He also mentioned that his upcoming single is a big step in his journey as an artist, calling it his most polished work so far.

“Every release teaches me something, but this one represents growth in every area. The production is more refined, the songwriting is more intentional, and I’ve pushed myself creatively to reach a wider audience without losing who I am as an artist,” he shared.

Talking about his growth as a songwriter and producer, Howell said he has moved from making catchy records to creating music that stirs emotions.

“Early on, I focused on making records that sounded good. Now I’m focused on creating music that makes people feel something. I’m always experimenting with new textures, vocal arrangements and ways to blend Caribbean influences with contemporary sounds while keeping the music organic and authentic,” he stated.

He also spoke about his hope to support Canada’s independent music scene through collaborations and mentoring, especially by helping new artists.

“I’m always excited to collaborate with artists and producers who bring fresh ideas and different perspectives. At the same time, I want to use music to inspire people, especially young artists who may not have access to opportunities,” he said.
