Nigeria has been drawn to play against El Salvador in the 2027 Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs. This follows their 0-4 loss to Morocco in Rabat, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
Even after the defeat, Nigeria is still in the race for a spot in World Group II. They will travel to El Salvador for the playoffs, set for February 5-7, 2027, according to the Davis Cup.
Morocco ended Nigeria's World Group II campaign with a 4-0 win at the Railway Club courts in Rabat on Sunday, September 20.
Morocco took an early 2-0 lead on the first day. Karim Bennani and Yassine Dlimi won their singles matches convincingly.
Bennani started the tie with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win over Canice Abua. Dlimi followed with a similar 6-1, 6-2 victory against Yusuf Abubakar, putting Morocco in charge.
The second day featured doubles matches and reverse singles. Nigeria's Michael Emmanuel and Abubakar faced Morocco's Younes Lalami and Dlimi.
The Moroccan duo won the doubles match 6-3, 6-2, sealing the victory for Morocco. Amine Jamji finished the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emmanuel in the reverse singles.
Nigeria earned promotion to World Group II in February after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
This promotion marked Nigeria's highest level ever in the Davis Cup.
Unfortunately, Nigeria's preparations for the Morocco match took a hit. Adeleye withdrew due to injury, and Seun Ogunsakin also pulled out because of fitness issues.
Adeleye had played a key role in the victory over Uzbekistan earlier this year.
Now, Nigeria will focus on the World Group II Playoffs against El Salvador as they aim to return to the second tier of the competition.
