Nigerian Stars Shine on Day 7 of Commonwealth Games

After another great day filled with a world record and two more medals, Team Nigeria is set to return to action on Thursday. They are led by Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, who aims to keep Nigeria's strong performance at the Commonwealth Games going.

As Day Seven kicks off, Nigeria is the top African nation on the medals table. The country has seven gold, five silver, and two bronze medals. This follows Goodness Nwachukwu’s world record throw in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus and Jessica Oji’s silver medal in her shot put debut on Wednesday.

All eyes will now be on the athletics track. Amusan is gearing up for another Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 100m hurdles. She will start with the morning heats and, if she qualifies, she will return later for the final.

Nigeria will also show strength in the 400m events. Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo are set for the men’s semi-finals. Ogazi qualified automatically, while Udo made a strong impression by winning his heat in 45.73 seconds during his senior debut for Nigeria.

In the women’s 400m semi-finals, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph, and Ella Onojuvwevwo will fight for spots in the final. Okon-George and Joseph earned automatic qualification from their heats. Ella got a direct entry into the semi-finals.

Nigerian medal chances also rest on Chukwuebuka Enekwechi. He will compete in the men’s shot put final after qualifying automatically with a first-round throw of 20.03m.

The sprint events continue with Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200m semi-finals. Jennifer Chukwuka Obi and Olayinka Olajide are aiming for spots in the women’s 200m final after advancing from their heats.

Earlier in the day, African champion Chinecherem Nnamdi will take part in the men’s javelin qualification. Jami Schlueter will start his decathlon campaign with the 100m, long jump, and shot put.

In para-athletics, Unyima Uwak will compete in the women’s T47 100m final. Obiageri Amaechi will also take part in the women’s discus final.

With medal events, semi-finals, and qualification rounds lined up throughout the day, Thursday looks to be another important day for Team Nigeria. The athletes are eager to add to their already impressive results in Glasgow.
