Tobi Amusan Joins Team Nigeria for Commonwealth Games Training

World record holder Tobi Amusan has reached Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland. This comes as the team gears up for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The current Commonwealth Games champion in the women’s 100m hurdles joins the Nigerian team after a solid run in the Diamond League. She has already secured a spot in the season-ending final in Brussels, Belgium, with four events still to go.

Amusan is seen as one of Team Nigeria’s top medal hopes in Glasgow. She aims to win her third straight Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 100m hurdles, having previously won gold in 2018 and 2022.

The 29-year-old athlete has had another great season. Earlier this year, she defended her African title in Ghana and recorded a personal best of 12.28 seconds, a time she has achieved three times this season.

She is the favorite for gold against strong competitors. This includes Jamaican athletes Megan Simmonds and Kerrica Hill, South Africa’s Marione Fourie, England’s Emma Nwofor, and Barbados’ Adeyah Brewster and Maya Rollins. Other challengers are Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid and Tatiana Aholou, Ghana’s Evonne Britton, Kenya’s Rukia Nusra Omulisia, and Australia’s Michelle Jenneke.

Team Nigeria started its camp in Aberdeen last week. Athletes are training at the Aberdeen Sports Village as they prepare for the Games.

Unfortunately, Nigeria’s preparations have hit a big setback. Long jump star Ese Brume has withdrawn due to injury.

Brume will miss the Commonwealth Games, ending her chance to defend the women’s long jump title she claimed last time with a record leap of 7.00 meters.

In her place, Ruth Usoro has been added to the squad and will compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump. Team Nigeria hopes to keep its strong record in this event at the Commonwealth Games.
