Nigeria’s women’s beach volleyball team is set to play against Mozambique in the semi-final of the 2026 African Beach Volleyball Championship. The match will take place in Alexandria, Egypt, today, Saturday. A spot in the final is on the line, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Esther Mbah and Pamela Bawa secured Nigeria's place in the semi-finals by beating Morocco 2-1. The thrilling quarter-final match ended with scores of 21-17, 15-21, and 15-11 at Abu Heif Beach on Friday.
Nigeria started strong, winning the first set 21-17. However, Morocco came back to take the second set 21-15, pushing the game to a third and final set.
Mbah and Bawa kept their cool in the decisive set, winning 15-11 and completing the comeback to reach the semi-finals.
This victory followed Nigeria's impressive win against hosts Egypt in the Round of 16. They won that match 2-0 with scores of 21-17 and 21-16 on Friday.
The Nigerian pair dominated the first set against Egypt and continued their strong performance in the second set. This win allowed them to move on to the quarter-finals.
Nigeria's coach, Kayode Ajilore, praised the players for their determination. He also emphasized that they will not underestimate Mozambique.
“The girls have proved why they are elite athletes and have improved over the years,” Ajilore said.
“The win against Egypt in the Round of 16 set the ball rolling for the players against Morocco. We are not going to underrate Mozambique. We’ll give our best and bring honour to the nation.”
Nigeria is now just two wins away from claiming the continental title. The championship also provides a direct ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games for the winners.
