Former Super Eagles player Osaze Odemwingie has shared the surprising story of how Nigeria’s U-23 team ended up wearing the Super Falcons' kits during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In a chat with Super Falcons captain Rashidat Ajibade on her Rash for Christ podcast, Odemwingie talked about how the team's success surprised even their own officials.
Odemwingie explained that officials thought Nigeria would leave the tournament early. They had already sent most of the team's kits back home.
But the players kept winning, and by the time Nigeria made it to the knockout rounds, they had to use the women’s team kits.
“At the Beijing Olympics with Siasia, we had to wear the girls’ kits for the second round and the rest,” Odemwingie said.
“Apparently, they thought we were not going to get far. They sent all the kits back home to give away or whatever. The Falcons, I think they didn’t make it through the next stage, they now left their kits.”
Other teams noticed the strange situation. Odemwingie said players from the United States joked about Nigeria wearing the same outfits.
“Then we made it out of the group and the American team is saying, ‘You guys are wearing the same clothes all the time’. They laughed at us.”
With few options, some Nigerian players bought plain white T-shirts.
“Some of us went to buy plain white T-shirts.”
Despite the kit issues, Nigeria played well in the tournament. They reached the gold medal match against Argentina.
Nigeria finished with the silver medal after losing 1-0 to Argentina in the final, with Ángel Di María scoring the only goal.
The Beijing Olympics is one of Nigeria’s memorable football stories. Odemwingie’s tale adds a light-hearted touch to the serious competition.
The players faced a problem with their kits but still managed to go far in the tournament.
What started with officials preparing for an early exit ended with Nigeria competing for Olympic gold.
And along the way, the Super Eagles had to borrow kits from the Falcons and make do with plain white T-shirts.
It was an unusual moment in an otherwise great silver-medal journey.
