Former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba will leave Monaco after facing many injuries, the French club announced on Wednesday.
Pogba, 33, won the World Cup with France in 2018. But since his doping ban, he has had a hard time getting back to his best.
Monaco shared that the goals they set for Pogba were “only partially achieved.” Because of this, they are ending his contract, which was supposed to last until June 2027.
Pogba is currently out with a thigh injury, coming back from a knee issue.
Monaco praised Pogba’s “remarkable mindset, determination and unwavering high standards.” They noted that even when he was hurt, he positively influenced the team by “sharing his experience and know-how” with other players.
In the same statement, Pogba admitted that he had not “played as many matches” for Monaco as he wished. He only played in six Ligue 1 matches last season, totaling 115 minutes.
He expressed gratitude to the “president, management, teammates, all the staff as well as all the supporters who believed.”
Pogba made 233 appearances during two spells at Manchester United. He was also named the Serie A Player of the Year at Juventus, where he won the Italian title four times.
He was a crucial player for the France team that won the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
But in 2023, he tested positive for testosterone while playing for Juventus. He claimed the substance was in a food supplement given by a doctor in the United States, but he received a four-year ban.
After appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the ban was reduced to 18 months.
After finishing the ban, he joined Monaco last year.
