The federal government has announced Friday, June 12, as a public holiday. This day celebrates Nigeria’s 27 years of continuous democratic rule.
This information was shared in a statement on Thursday in Abuja by Magdalene Ajani, who is the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior.
Ajani explained that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this announcement on behalf of the federal government.
Mr Tunji-Ojo emphasized the government's commitment to upholding democratic values, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and governance that includes everyone.
He assured that the ministry, along with relevant security agencies, would keep working on measures to maintain and improve Nigeria’s internal security.
The minister pointed out that a secure and stable environment is important for democracy and national growth. He encouraged Nigerians to use this holiday to think about their civic duties.
"As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that support our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens," he stated.
He also highlighted that June 12 is an important date in Nigeria’s history. It honors the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who made democratic governance possible.
"Their legacies continue to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state," Mr Tunji-Ojo added.
