Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard will set aside their club bond when England takes on Norway in Saturday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final. This match is expected to feature a key individual battle between the two players.

Both Rice and Odegaard played major roles in helping Arsenal win the Premier League. They helped their team lift the title for the first time in 22 years.

They also reached the UEFA Champions League final but lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. Now, the two 27-year-olds will face each other as they aim for World Cup success with their national teams.

Odegaard, who is the captain of Norway, has stood out during the tournament. He has provided three assists, which is only behind Michael Olise, Brahim Diaz, and Bruno Guimaraes.

A FIFA report on Thursday highlighted Odegaard's effort in the tournament. He has made 229 sprints, the most by any player in the Norway squad. Only Sander Berge has run a greater distance than him.

In a 2025 interview, Rice praised Odegaard's leadership. He said, "He’s one of the best lads I’ve seen in terms of how he lives his life off the pitch."

Rice added, "He’s got the full respect of the [Arsenal] dressing room, the way he demands, the way he drives the team, the way he speaks. He’s been amazing for us, and I wouldn’t want anyone else being our captain."

Now, Rice will need to limit Odegaard’s impact when the match kicks off. Playing in a deeper midfield role for England, Rice has also shone during the tournament. He completed 91 percent of his 171 passes and has provided solid defensive support.

Odegaard also spoke highly of Rice before their match. He said, "He’s someone who always gives absolutely everything for the team. He is always fighting for every single ball, bringing his energy to the pitch, driving the team forward."

Odegaard continued, "He can defend, he can attack, he can be physical, he can be good on the ball. He’s a very complete player, so it’s going to be a good test for all of us."

England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, praised Rice as well. He said, "He is one of the very best midfielders in the world."

Tuchel added, "He is also very humble, a football lover. He is a team player and is ready every day to give energy and quality to the group. I am proud to be his coach."

Both players are now focused on helping their countries make history. England is looking for its first World Cup title since 1966. Norway is enjoying its best World Cup run ever, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.
