Nigeria's young sprint star Rosemary Nwankwo has been invited to join the Commonwealth Games training camp in Abuja. This comes after some athletes pulled out of the athletics squad.

Nwankwo's school, Nigerian Tulip International College, and her track club, N-Youth Sports Academy, announced her invitation on Wednesday.

She was not part of the original squad of 29 athletes released by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. Her call-up follows the withdrawals of US-based sprinter Tima Godbless and Ella Onojuvwevwo.

But Nwankwo may not join the camp right away. She is set to compete at the CAA African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Dakar, Senegal, from July 4 to 5.

Even with school on her plate, Nwankwo has had a great season. She took part in all three legs of the MTN Champs. She also helped Nigeria qualify for the World Championships in the women’s 4x100m relay at the World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

Nwankwo also competed at the African Championships. She fought hard for a spot in Nigeria's Commonwealth Games squad at the National Trials in June.

After receiving her invitation, she will join other sprinters Blessing Ogundiran, Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, Olayinka Olajide, and Obi Chukwuka in camp.

The athlete from N-Youth Sports Academy has impressive season’s best times of 11.42 seconds in the 100m and 23.19 seconds in the 200m.
