Nigeria’s senior men’s rugby sevens team, the Stallions, will compete against Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Morocco in Pool A of the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series.
This tournament, which is also the African qualifier for the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3, is set to happen in Kampala, Uganda, on September 26 and 27.
To move on to the semi-finals, the Stallions must finish in the top two of their group. The team that wins the tournament will secure Africa’s spot for the 2027 SVNS 3.
In Pool B, hosts Uganda will face Zambia, Tunisia, and Senegal in this eight-team competition.
This event marks the beginning of the updated 2026 Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens Series. It gives teams a chance to improve their rankings across the continent.
For Nigeria, this tournament is a chance to get back onto the international sevens scene after missing out on global competitions.
The Stallions are one of eight teams confirmed to participate in this qualifying tournament. Rugby Africa made changes to its competition schedule, leading to this event.
Originally, there was to be a 12-team Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius. However, it was postponed due to the Ebola outbreak. Uganda was then chosen to host this eight-team qualifying tournament, while the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament is still planned for Mauritius in October.
During the pool stage, the Nigerian team will face Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Morocco. After that, the knockout phase will begin, with the top two teams from each group moving on to the semi-finals.
The winner in Kampala will earn the right to represent Africa at the 2027 World Rugby SVNS 3.
The Stallions will need to overcome a tough Pool A before focusing on the qualification spot available in Uganda.
