Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle has said Nigeria will fight for victory when they take on Poland in an international friendly on Wednesday. The arrival of defender Calvin Bassey has given the team a big boost in Warsaw.
Bassey joined the squad at the team’s Presidential Hotel on Tuesday. This brings the number of players in camp to 20, giving Chelle a nearly complete team ahead of the match against the White-Reds.
The Fulham defender's presence strengthens Nigeria's defense. The Super Eagles want to carry on the good feeling from their recent Unity Cup win in London.
Before the match, Chelle made it clear that his team is focused on winning. "Now, we have a team and we are preparing to go out there and win. Winning is the mentality that we are trying to create in the team and in the players. We will go for a win on Wednesday," the coach stated.
The Franco-Malian coach recently led the Super Eagles to another Unity Cup victory after wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica. The friendly against Poland gives him another chance to evaluate his squad while building a winning spirit.
With Bassey available, Chelle has many options in defense. The former Ajax player can play alongside Semi Ajayi in central defense, while Igoh Ogbu and Emmanuel Fernandez offer extra support.
Chelle also has strong choices for full-backs. Zaidu Sanusi and Bruno Onyemaechi are expected to compete for the left-back position.
The competition is tough in goal, too. Maduka Okoye arrived in Warsaw on Monday and did well in training. He will compete with Arthur Okonkwo and Francis Uzoho for the starting spot.
Okonkwo has started his international career well, keeping clean sheets in his first two games for Nigeria during the Unity Cup tournament.
In midfield, captain Wilfred Ndidi is set to lead a group that includes Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tochukwu Nnadi, and young player Abdullahi Bewene.
Nigeria’s attack looks strong, with Moses Simon, Terem Moffi, Akor Adams, Rafiu Durosinmi, and Paul Onuachu ready for selection.
Onuachu came to camp in high spirits after winning the Turkish Super Lig Goal of the Season award. Germany-based winger Philip Otele, who impressed during the Unity Cup, was expected to arrive later on Tuesday.
Like Nigeria, Poland is also using this international window to try out new players. Head coach Jan Urban gave chances to several debutants in his team’s last game against Ukraine and is expected to keep experimenting with his squad.
Winger Jakub Kamiński is one of the players likely to play a big role for the hosts, along with several young talents eager to show what they can do.
The match will take place at the 58,000-capacity PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw, with kick-off set for 7:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
