Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, performed at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Wednesday. She joined many global music stars at this big event filled with music, applause, and celebration.

CBS News reported on Thursday that the ceremony took place at John Lewis Plaza on the 19-acre campus. It formally dedicated the $850 million center ahead of its public opening on June 19. Community celebrations are set to run from June 18 to June 21.

Tems was part of a star-studded lineup, including Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Common, Bono and The Edge, Marc Anthony, and The Roots. The audience cheered and gave standing ovations throughout the program.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama and his family were also at the ceremony. His daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, were seen enjoying the performances during the event.

In a video clip shared online, Tems spoke to the audience before her performance. She wore a bright red gown and said, “I am so blessed and honoured to be here… this is you, everyone, here, to Mr and Mrs Obama, to Sandra, and all the family.”

Tems later opened up about her nerves during her speech. She accidentally misnamed Obama’s daughters while on stage. She took to social media to share her feelings, saying: “Lord knows I was nervous! Please forgive me!!!”

Despite this slip, the Nigerian star received a warm welcome for her performance at the ceremony, which was broadcast worldwide. Other notable figures present included former U.S. Presidents Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, along with various political, cultural, and entertainment leaders.

The ceremony is part of a three-day program that started with the dedication on June 18. The public opening is set for June 19, with community events continuing until June 21.

This event also shines a light on the increasing Nigerian representation at the Obama Presidential Center. A portrait by Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby is on display at the site.
