Around the world, people are worrying about the decline of democracy. As these issues take center stage globally, the Obama Presidential Center reminds us of the core values and expectations of democratic governance.

Many people remember Obama's presidency for its strong influence on global politics. But the value of the presidential center goes beyond its impressive structure. The design, with its four hands, reflects his remarkable history.

In this piece, I want to show what the Obama Presidential Center means to both America and the world.

By looking at America’s path, Obama's own experiences, and the ideals of the founding fathers, the center invites everyone to think about the promise of government by the people. It has the potential to inspire global belief in values like unity, patriotism, selflessness and service. People around the world must face the challenges in our democracies and be ready to have honest discussions about how to improve. The Obama Presidential Center provides a space for this.

Obama's campaign was a turning point in political history. Hope, inclusivity, unity, empowerment, and change were key themes of his campaign and time in office. This campaign inspired many people worldwide and should be studied and preserved. The Obama Presidential Center will ensure future generations learn about decency, the power of words, and how political campaigns can motivate citizens to act, create change, and take charge.

For example, the exhibit titled "Toward A More Perfect Union" in the Obama Presidential Center Museum will remind nations to keep pushing for excellent democracy. It will highlight the strength of community, showing that people from different backgrounds and experiences can unite to achieve great things.

The Democracy in Action Lab at the center will help young people from across the globe become better citizens and leaders. Don Wilson, a former official archivist of the United States, noted that presidential libraries are "less monuments to great men than classrooms of democracy." The Obama Presidential Center will raise awareness about citizenship, development, and governance, and what these ideas mean in our own countries.

The Center’s mission, found on its website, includes building democratic knowledge and skills, connecting people with shared values, and promoting a better world. The library is 95 percent digital, meaning you don’t have to be in Chicago to access materials or resources for leadership and learning. The Obama Foundation Scholars initiative offers young leaders from around the world a chance to expand their impact. There are also special education and development programs for youth, such as the Girls Opportunity Alliance and My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.

It might be easy to see the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago as distant and unrelated. But the values linked to democratic governance that the center promotes, which reflect Obama’s own principles, will help advance society, democracy, liberty, equality, and peace among nations.
