The United Kingdom and Canada are working to strengthen ties in trade, defence, and artificial intelligence. The prime ministers of both countries met in the UK on Wednesday evening.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney before they both watched Everton play in the Carabao Cup. This information comes from a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The statement said, "The Prime Minister met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney this evening, before the two leaders watched their football club Everton play."

The main focus of the meeting was on improving relations between the two countries and working more closely with European partners, especially in trade and defence.

According to the British government, "The leaders began by underscoring the close cooperation between the UK and Canada and emphasised the importance of building similar close ties with European partners, particularly on trade and defence."

On defence matters, Starmer praised Canada for becoming the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme, known as GCAP, over the summer.

The statement noted, "The Prime Minister welcomed Canada becoming the first observer nation in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) this summer."

Both leaders also talked about boosting defence cooperation and the ongoing efforts of the Multilateral Defence Mechanism and the Defence Security Resilience Bank.

They also brought up artificial intelligence, discussing the benefits and challenges that come with the technology.

The British government stated, "The leaders also discussed the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence."

Starmer and Carney agreed that both governments and tech companies should work together to tackle concerns related to AI and ensure safety for users online.

The statement highlighted, "They agreed on the importance of governments and the technology sector working together to address shared concerns and protect online safety."

The meeting took place while both leaders attended Everton’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Everton match added a sporting touch to their meeting, with the British government calling the club the football club of both leaders.

Starmer and Carney ended their discussions by looking forward to more talks in the future.

The statement concluded, "The leaders looked forward to speaking again soon."
