Argentina's captain Lionel Messi was filled with emotion, shedding tears after his team came back to beat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16. This win keeps their World Cup title defense alive.
Argentina looked set to go home at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday. They were down 0-2 as late as the 75th minute after Messi missed a penalty kick when they were already trailing 1-0.
But the defending champions made a stunning comeback. Cristian Romero scored with a header in the 79th minute, bringing hope back to the team and their fans.
Messi equalized in the 85th minute with a sharp finish. Enzo Fernández then headed in the winning goal during stoppage time, thanks to a cross from Lautaro Martínez.
A video making the rounds online shows the moment the referee blew the final whistle during the intense finish. Messi can be seen pumping his fists and crying before he covers his face.
His teammates quickly rushed to him, lifting him in celebration. They all shared in the joy of the victory.
Even though Messi missed an important chance to score earlier in the match, he played a key role in the comeback. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner assisted and scored, extending his record of goals in nine straight World Cups.
Egypt, who started strong with goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Zico, fought hard and almost scored again on the counterattack. But Argentina's late push was too much for them.
This win takes Argentina to the quarter-finals, where they will continue their chase for the title.
