Two well-known Ghanaian footballers, brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew, are without clubs after their contracts ended on June 30. This is the first time in their careers that both siblings are free agents at the same time.

Jordan, 34, finished his contract with Leicester City after the 2025/26 season. He just led the Black Stars in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. He played in all four of Ghana’s matches before they lost 1-0 to Colombia in the Round of 32. Jhon Arias scored the only goal in that match.

His performance in the tournament sparked strong reactions. Former Tema East MP Nii Kwartei Titus Glover was one of the loudest critics. He told Channel TV that Jordan had “outlived his stay” with the national team.

“Jordan Ayew has outlived his stay, and he can only play 20 to 25 minutes. He holds onto the ball too much, and he is so slow. As a striker, you don’t hold onto the ball too much. With air balls and ground balls, you should be quick,” Glover said.

He added that the forward should have had a smaller role during the tournament. He said, “Jordan Ayew was a disaster, and he should have played a maximum of 20 minutes and allowed the young players to feature.”

Andre is also in a tough spot. The older brother, who is 36, finished the season with NAC Breda in the Dutch Eredivisie after signing a short-term deal. Now that contract has also expired.

He was not included in Ghana’s World Cup squad by coach Carlos Queiroz. The coach believed Andre had lost his speed after a tough season at the club. He chose younger players for the attack instead.

Andre led Ghana as captain in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His absence from the 2026 tournament likely marks the end of a long international career that lasted over 15 years with the Black Stars.

Jordan and Andre are the sons of one of Africa’s best players, Abedi Pele. Together, they have built impressive careers in European football.

Jordan has played for clubs like Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, and Leicester City. Andre has been with teams such as Marseille, Swansea City, West Ham United, and Al Sadd before his time in the Netherlands.
