Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund stayed close at the top of the German Bundesliga after winning their matches 2-1 against Mainz and Elversberg on Saturday.

Both teams are on 21 points, with Bayern slightly ahead on goal difference after nine games. They drew 2-2 in Munich last Saturday.

Phillip Tietz scored a stoppage-time goal for Mainz, but it was too late for them to equalize. This win was only Bayern's third in their last seven Bundesliga matches at Mainz.

Harry Kane has had a quiet few games since winning the Ballon d’Or last month. But he assisted Joshua Kimmich's first goal after 14 minutes and set up another goal for Lennart Karl in the second half. Kane has 10 goals and 10 assists this season.

Kimmich expressed his joy to DAZN about Kane extending his contract with Bayern until 2029. He said, "He’s one of the reasons why things just click in the dressing room. He’s a Ballon d’Or-level player, yet he’s never above doing the little things."

Kimmich continued, "He’s the type of person who is always there for every single teammate. And that is truly something very, very special."

Bayern, who won 2-0 against Atletico Madrid earlier in the week, are coping with a growing list of injuries. They were without coach Vincent Kompany, who is recovering from illness, and also missed Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Ismael Saibari, and Serge Gnabry.

Kimmich returned to the team last week after his father passed away. He was visibly emotional after scoring. He said, "Naturally, the moment I scored, that was the first thing that came to mind. So, it was definitely more emotional than usual… Besides, I don’t score that many anyway."

Manuel Neuer made history as the oldest player in Bayern’s history at 40 years and 225 days old. He had to be substituted before half-time due to a foot injury.

In Dortmund, Felix Nmecha scored two goals in the second half to lead his team to victory over Elversberg. However, a goal from Noel Futkeu in the last nine minutes made it tense for Dortmund.

Both of Nmecha's goals were scored from outside the box. Dortmund managed to win despite missing their striker Serhou Guirassy and losing in-form forward Carney Chukwuemeka early in the match.

Nmecha commented on the title race, saying, "It might sound boring, but we just need to go from game to game. It’s a very long season but we need to keep going like this."

RB Leipzig had a shaky start, conceding a goal within the first minute but managed to beat Augsburg 5-2. This win keeps them in good form at home.

Leipzig lost 3-2 to Manchester City at home in the Champions League on Wednesday. They now sit three points behind Bayern and Dortmund in the league.

Leipzig had not conceded at home in the league this season but fell behind after 36 seconds when Anton Kade scored from a Willi Orban mistake. They quickly bounced back and won with goals from Ezechiel Banzuzi, Christopher Nkunku, David Raum, Romulo, and Christoph Baumgartner.

Uchenna Ogundu scored a late consolation for Augsburg. Leipzig has now won all five of their Bundesliga home games, scoring 23 goals and allowing only two.

In other matches, Jonathan Burkardt scored twice as Eintracht Frankfurt drew 2-2 with promoted team Paderborn. Later on Saturday, Niclas Fuellkrug will play his first match since being recalled to Jurgen Klopp’s Germany squad when Werder Bremen faces Stuttgart.
